Company Description

Marchetti Sergio owner of the estate of Fossacolle, belongs to an old family of the 18th century. This family’s descendants have ever been living and farming on the land of a large and noble lineage as sharecroppers.

At the beginning of the 80ties, the owner of this land, sold the territories where the Marchettis worked and decided to donate them the “Podere Fossacolle” to compensate the work of our family for a century. In 1984, the first Sangiovese-vineyards were planted, marking the start of the viniculture activity.

On January 1st, 2002, the winery issued their first Brunello di Montalcino, vintage 1997.

Marchetti Sergio and his family mind about the agronomy work and his son-in-law Bambagioni Adriano with his son Stefano mind about the enological and commercial work.

The winery in owned and run only by our family without any outside consultants or employees.

Our vineyard is less than 4 hectare (2.2 Ha of Brunello di Montalcino and 1 Ha of Rosso di Montalcino, 0.5 ha IGT Sangiovese) placed in a little Medieval Village in Tavernelle, in the south of Montalcino; the scenary of peace and quiet, surrounded by woods and vineyards, and the air from the near Maremma create a perfect climate to grow and to mature our grapes.

The soil, at an altitude of 300 metres, is of medium compactness, tending to clayey in the original part and more mineral in the new vineyards of 2018. The average age of the vineyards is of 25 years elevated as spurred cordon and guyot, with a medium density of 4000 vines/ha.

Thanks to the small dimension of our estate we can do a wonderful cure of the vines, attended as a handicraft way as if it dealt with a small garden, with a high attention on the biodiversity. The terroir here at Fossacolle is productive and quite distinctive.

Our grapes picked up by hand in small boxes, after some days of cold pre-fermentation, vinificates both in the steel tubs inox termoregolated and concrete vats; where the long macerations , the frequent fulling and delestage optimize the extraction from the peels.

Ageing take place in French and Slavonian oaks for all of our wines, before a second passage in concrete vats before the bottling.

As a family winery with his roots deep in this territory, we are very focused in preserve the enviroment and the equilibrium in our vineyards. In addition to a 10 years old solar panel system to cut down emission, We started 4 years ago a water recovery and re-use project. We store all the possible rain water during the year in underground concrete tank to use it during the year and avoid any waste.
