Company Description
Ciccone Vini is a family-run winery founded in 1940 by Orlando Ciccone. In the 1980s, his son Alberto continued the family tradition, focusing on quality and experimenting with new winemaking techniques to revive Montonico, a nearly forgotten local grape variety. Since 2016, the winery has been led by Matteo Ciccone, who represents the third generation and is dedicated to further developing the potential of this indigenous grape.
The vineyards cover 2 hectares in Bisenti, in the province of Teramo, situated at 400 meters above sea level between the Gran Sasso mountains and the Adriatic Sea. This unique location, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, along with significant day-night temperature variations, enhances the aromatic qualities of the grapes.
Montonico is an ancient, resilient and versatile variety, recognized as a Slow Food Presidium, known for its ability to retain freshness and acidity. It is used to produce both still and sparkling wines of notable aromatic complexity. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October.
Matteo’s philosophy combines respect for traditional methods with ongoing research into innovative and sustainable practices, ensuring great attention to detail throughout the entire production process.
The winery’s flagship wine is PILATUM, an Abruzzo DOP Metodo Classico sparkling wine aged on the lees for at least 36 months. It presents citrus, white flower and bread crust aromas, with a direct, creamy and savory palate and a flinty finish. It pairs well with cured meats and aged cheeses.
Ciccone Vini has received important recognition, including Best Winery at Pescara Abruzzo Wine (2021, AIES special prize) and Best Classic Method Sparkling Wine for Pilatum Pas Dosé (2024).
