THE ORIGINS

The Quistello Cooperative Winery was founded in 1928. More than 90 years have passed since a group of visionary winemakers established it.

However, we like to think that our Winery has its roots in a much older history—a history made as much of farmers as of poets. A history that takes us back to truly distant times!

The production area of Lambrusco Mantovano is indeed a region with very ancient viticultural and gastronomic traditions, and to find the first traces of “Labrusca” or “Lambrusca,” as the vineyards from which our wine comes were originally called, we need to look back into the past.

Just a few kilometers southeast of Mantua, for instance, lies an important Etruscan settlement from the 6th-4th centuries B.C.: the Forcello Archaeological Park.

These findings support the thesis that local wine was long a subject of export.

The “Labrusca” was known not only by the Etruscans but also by the Romans.

Almost 2,000 years ago, for example, the citation of “Vitis Labrusca” in the fifth Eclogue by the Mantuan poet Virgil represents a valuable and direct testimony of the presence of the Lambrusco grape in the Mantuan territory!

Certainly, vine cultivation became fundamentally important at the end of the 11th century with the Benedictine monks in the territories of the Abbey of Polirone in San Benedetto Po.

Peasants used the grapes from Lambrusco vineyards to secure a high-quality wine, highly appreciated by the monks for its taste, aroma, and deep color.
