Company Description
Quality and authenticity of wines, continuous research of the most innovative technologies, focus on environmental sustainability and production processes are our DNA. The utmost respect for viticulture and agriculture inspired our claim: Chiamami quando piove – “call me with the rain”, i.e. when you can’t work in the vineyard – means giving the right space to the time of nature and that of man, to work as to human relationships.
It does not mean chasing bucolic ideals that are detached from reality. Instead, the company’s view is to research and integrate skills, innovation, and protection of the territory to promote modern organic farming to contribute, through excellent and safe products, to spreading a sustainable lifestyle.
The Company
Chiamami quando piove – Valori is a modern and up-to-date winery, rooted in one of the best wine-making areas of Abruzzo, the Teramo Hills, where it stretches over 14 hectares between the villages of Sant’Omero and Controguerra. Founded by Luigi Valori in Sant’Omero in 1996, today it produces about 125,000 bottles a year for a total of 6 labels, including fresh wines and reserves, in which the native Abruzzi varieties predominate. Our view relies on the commitment to research and integrate skills, innovation and love for our land to promote innovative organic agriculture that combines the best of tradition and contemporary tech, to guarantee its customers healthy and safe products and safeguard the environment with the least polluting methods. We believe in a high-quality agriculture that, on top of being organic, is sustainable for the environment, for the community and for the market. We fund our daily work on scientific research to achieve better efficiency, yields and environmental protection, to contribute through excellent products to the spread of a sustainable lifestyle.
The Winemaker
“Working in the vineyard was the most extraordinary experience of human growth in my life, because it taught me to know my limits, even before making wines”, Luigi Valori.
Luigi Valori is a man with countless interests and strong passions, three of them cultivated over a lifetime with creativity and devotion: philosophy, agronomy and football.
Professional soccer player in the golden Ascoli, in the 70s he knows the glories of the “Serie A”. His retirement from the soccer fields in 1983 offers him the opportunity and the energy to devote himself to the study of wine and the management of vineyards: in 1996, he buys the first vineyard and starts his own experiments with viticulture and winemaking. In between harvesting, he conveys the profound interest in philosophy in a course of study at the Pontifical Vatican University, where he graduates in theology in 2006.
The real turning point comes with the meeting of Gianni Masciarelli, pioneer of modern Abruzzi viticulture, which significantly influences his way of conceiving and making wine. Gianni infects him with his extraordinary vitality and teaches him that wine is a concrete element, which always reflects the personality and the level of involvement of the producer. When Gianni creates his distribution line “Masciarelli Distribuzione” in 2005 – today Gianni’s Selection – Luigi’s labels come in.
Vineyards
The Valori vineyards are in the Teramo Hills, north of the region and one of the best production areas of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, home to the highest wine origin appellation. A few kilometres from the sea, still surrounded by the climate and the Mediterranean shrubland but close to the extreme offshoots of Gran Sasso d’Abruzzo, there are Chiamami quando piove – Valori 14 hectares of vineyards.
These are small parcels articulated between the municipalities of Controguerra and Sant’Omero, characterized by southeast exposure and an altitude ranging between 160 and 300 meters above sea level. The medium sandy soils, poor in nutrients but rich in minerals, forcing the vines to the limit of cultivation, generate grapes of great quality and balance, in which the phenolic maturity is pushed to the maximum.
Wines
Chiamami quando piove – Valori produces authentic wines, the result of an unfiltered relationship between man, plants and the land.
Of the six organic labels, three are ready to drink – Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC, Abruzzo Pecorino DOC – and the remaining three are intended for ageing – Merlot Colli Aprutini IGT Inkiostro, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Riserva Vigna Sant’Angelo and Abruzzo Pecorino DOC Octava Dies.
All our products are distributed by the Gianni’s Selection, the distribution range created by Gianni Masciarelli inside Masciarelli Tenute Agricole. It is a company that besides producing fine wines for over 30 years it has also specialized in the selection, import and distribution of high-end wines from the most interesting winemaking areas in Europe.
