Company Description

Masserie Zappacosta was born from the dream of Flavio Zappacosta’s family to invest in the landscape and agriculture of one of the smallest and most unspoiled regions of southern Italy: Molise. Since 2009, the family has been acquiring agricultural businesses, some with historic value, that were facing economic and financial hardship.

The estate stretches across three hills along the Molise coastline, in the small community of Montenero di Bisaccia, in a microclimate softened by sea breezes and ideal for natural farming. On each hill stands an ancient masseria — a rural building that once combined the farmer’s house, the stable, and tool storage areas into a single structure — now carefully preserved to protect the historical memory of local rural culture.

Respect for the land, especially in light of climate change, is a core value of the company. Its agricultural and cultural strategy embraces organic and regenerative farming, with long-term soil restoration plans and the exclusive use of organic inputs. Heavy tillage has been abandoned in favor of agroecological practices and carbon sequestration methods. Traditional crop rotations are reinterpreted through nitrogen-fixing plants, alongside the revival of heritage crops such as dicoccum spelt and the ancient durum wheat variety “Cappelli,” as well as innovative protein-rich crops and spices like coriander.

Olive groves are managed using natural techniques, including green manure and nectar-producing plants, and the company promotes a Molise P.D.O. Extra Virgin Olive Oil through its own EVOO line. Bees play a central ecological role, supporting biodiversity and environmental balance. Thanks to the founders’ engineering and landscape expertise, the farm applies precision agriculture systems, including satellite monitoring, drones, and automated guidance technologies.

The EVOOs, produced exclusively from estate-grown olives, are certified organic and suitable for Mediterranean, vegetarian, and vegan diets. Production areas include both young olive groves and centuries-old native trees, particularly the “Cerasa di Montenero” cultivar, used to produce distinctive single-variety oils. The company’s strong bond with territory and art is expressed through label designs created by artist Massimo Pasca, celebrating the biodiversity of the estate across every bottle and gift box
