Company Description

Our family has been deeply rooted in Montepulciano for seven generations. At Podere Le Caggiole, we have always produced wine, passing down from father to son the craft of winemaking and a genuine love for our land. Originally, the estate was farmed under a sharecropping system within the historic Gamberucci family property; in 1962, we became owners of part of what is now the current estate.

Today, the company covers approximately 65 hectares, of which 46 are located in the Montefollonico area, home to our agriturismo Villa Tiberini, with 1,800 olive trees. At Le Caggiole, we cultivate 16 hectares of vineyards and 2 hectares of olive groves, situated at an average altitude of 310 meters above sea level, on the hills that slope from Montepulciano toward the Valdichiana, in what is considered the true “heart” of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

It is precisely in Le Caggiole that the cultivation of the vine has been historically documented since Etruscan times. Over the years, Podere Le Caggiole has undergone a significant evolution, becoming today a dynamic, organic estate deeply attentive to its relationship with nature—values that have also led us to begin the process toward sustainability certification.

Here, we live and work with a single goal: achieving the highest possible quality, respecting the path laid out by previous generations, confident in the unique characteristics of our territory and with a thoughtful eye toward the future.

Our vineyards lie on medium-textured soils rich in tuff, clay, skeletal material, and Pliocene-origin sands. Both old and new plantings are established at a density of approximately 4,200 vines per hectare, with an ampelographic base composed exclusively of native and local grape varieties, without the use of international cultivars.

The training system is unilateral Guyot, with deliberately low yields that never exceed 45–50 quintals per hectare. Our production philosophy is based on yield limitation, supported by the estate’s microclimate and soil composition, which naturally restrain excessive vegetative vigor.

This approach is ensured through rigorous agronomic practices, all compliant with certified Organic Farming standards, officially adopted in 2015 but practiced on our land since 1987, when we were among the first seven wineries in Tuscany to follow what was then known as the “Integrated Pest Management” protocol.

Agronomic operations are carried out primarily by members of our family, with occasional support from external collaborators and the use of estate-owned machinery, constantly updated to keep pace with the most advanced mechanical and agronomic technologies.

Every vineyard intervention is performed with strict scientific awareness: thanks to our on-site weather stations, we minimize antifungal treatments, encouraging the development of natural resistance and increased biodiversity.

Particular attention is devoted to the grape ripening phase, one of the most important quality parameters for us. Harvesting is carried out strictly by hand, with careful cluster selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar using a Socma optical sorter.

During harvesting, we preserve the integrity of the grapes, using small containers and minimizing the time between cutting the cluster and the start of cellar processing, which never exceeds 15 minutes.

The proximity of all vineyards to the winery and a well-established transport system allow us to reduce oxidation risks to an absolute minimum. Our wines are produced exclusively from estate-grown grapes; we do not purchase fruit from external sources.

We rigorously respect the vintage and the typicity of the area of origin, aiming to express an authentic and recognizable sense of place, a precise stylistic identity, confirmed by numerous awards.

The winery is intentionally oversized compared to production needs, ensuring absolute control over every phase of winemaking. We are equipped with advanced temperature-control systems, inert gas installations, micro-oxygenation technology, and a wide range of vessels: stainless steel tanks, vitrified concrete tanks, and wood for aging.

The use of modern technology, combined with this deliberate oversizing, allows us each year to choose the best solutions to enhance our grapes while preserving their territorial identity.

The real challenge is to avoid becoming dependent on technology, using it only to express the unique characteristics of each vineyard and each vintage.

This is our family’s philosophy: continuous evolution built upon knowledge and experience handed down by previous generations.

We currently produce approximately 60,000 bottles, divided into 10 different wines, structured in a production pyramid across market segments. The range includes 5 DOCG, 1 DOC, and 4 IGT wines.

Throughout our journey, we have learned that excelling requires constant self-questioning. Only by never being fully satisfied can we pursue absolute quality, the only true path to standing out in today’s wine landscape.
