THE ESTATE AND THE TERRITORY

The estate Serafini and its farmhouses were mentioned for the first time with the name “Podere Poggio Becchi di Sopra” in the General Land Registry of the Mainland, known as the Leopoldino Registry, and promulgated in 1765 by Pietro Leopoldo Grand Duke of Tuscany.

The property is a wildlife reserve, rich in fallow deer, roe deer, wild boars, hares, pheasants and woodcocks, located on the hills of Torrita di Siena, a territory of Tuscany which lies among Chianti Classico and Montalcino, still little known, with a unique terroir of absolute originality.

On the land, there are some historic buildings, already registered and present in the Leopoldino Land Registry of 1765, which are the subject of a conservative and renovation project. These include a large manor house of Leopoldine architecture, with round arches, cross vaults, balconies and loggias, a cellar, a barrel cellar, a characteristic well, an eighteenth-century oven with its annexes, an old tobacco storage building, and a scenic tasting room overlooking the vineyards.

THE PHILOSOPHY AND THE LOGO

“The choral work in the vineyard and the cellar is equal to that of a great artistic workshop in Tuscany in the fifteenth century”: this is the philosophy of the owner of the farm, Paolo Serafini, historian and art critic. A philosophy aimed to produce wines with a precise identity, expression of this unique terroir, of great elegance and originality, capable of arouse a deep emotion. Elegance, balance, longevity, perseverance are infact the four characteristics of the symbolism of the logo, the crane, which has populated these countryside areas since the fourteenth century.

With the sinuous curve that runs from its neck to the wings, the crane looks like the letter S of the Serafini family and symbolizes the philosophy of the company in the logo. The crane’s innate grace in the movements as well as in the courtship, the ability to stay upright and balanced on one leg, to live a long time, and the tenacity in covering very long migration distances, recall the key features of the wines produced here, which are characterized by elegance, balance, the long length of the period of aging in wood and refinement in the bottle, and a marked ability to improve its characteristics in time.

THE WINERY AND THE WINES

Upon the death of Domenico dei Marchesi Serafini in 2014, the estate passed to his son Paolo Sertafini, who immediately started the winery project under the direction of the world renowned winemaker Carlo Ferrini.

The farm extends on 12 hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Torrita di Siena, the vines are at an average height of about 350 m above sea level, and the terroir is absolutely unique with completely original mixtures of marne, marl and clay. There are 5 different vineyards, all biological certified, with different exposures and ages, some of great value for exposure and age of the vines (a vineyard from 1972 and a vineyard from 2001).

Ghino di Tacco, a pure Sangiovese (first vintage 2020) is the only wine produced so far, and two more red wines will be released in 2028 (vintage 2024) and 2029 (vintage 2025) from the vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Mourvedre.

Ghino di Tacco, a pure Sangiovese, who aged 18 months in tonneaux (1/3 new, 2/3 used) and 15 to 18 months in bottle (Vintage 2022 will be released in September 2026 after 24 months in bottle), takes its name from the famous character Ghino Di Tacco, who was born in this region. Mentioned by Dante and Boccaccio he belonged to the feudal family lords of Torrita di Siena, and after the murdered of his father became an outlaw and a rebel. His figure as a gentleman brigand and his deeds soon became popular and legendary thanks to his proud, charismatic, uncompromising, noble and elegant character: like Sangiovese.

Released in about 4.000 to 5.000 bottles per year, only from the best grapes, Ghino di Tacco is a very elegant and original Sangiovese, ruby, that starts with undergrowt woods and blackberry fruits, then shows off notes of blood orange, leather and tobacco, with a taste that expresses great balance between exuberant freshness and velvety tannins, and a long finish. Ghino di Tacco was awarded in both the first two vintages released (2020 and 2021) with the prize “5 Grappoli Bibenda”, wines of excellence of Italy.
