ABOUT US

we’re small artisan producer and vignerons

Podere45 is a small company located in the northwestern part of Sardinia within the Nurra area, more specifically in the reclamation area of the Alghero countryside, a place that enjoys an environmental system influenced by a mild climate, the proximity to the sea and the constant presence of winds throughout the year.

Our company is the result of a choice of two sisters and a brother, Valentina, Chiara and Gian Piero, who decided to give value to a small family vineyard, in order to produce wines that can be identified as a part and parcel of a territory which is strongly devoted to the winemaking tradition.

45 is the number assigned to our grandparents during the ETFAS (Authority for land and agricultural transformation in Sardinia) reclamation work.
We are winemakers and artisans, we take care of our vine and of the wines in our winery, mainly because we love to do it and since we believe it is the only way for us to be able to guarantee an authentic, unique and sincere product.

WINERY

Podere 45

The company was founded in 2021, when we decided to take over the existing family vineyard.

Currently, all of our products come from that single vineyard in Loc. Baratz, in the municipality of Sassari, located at about 50 m.a.s.l. and 3km from the west coast.

The vineyard has a total area of 2 hectares, equally divided between Vermentino and Cagnulari, entirely planted with espaliers. The average age of the vines is 25 years.

OUR VINEYARD

soil and history

Two types of Nurra’s characteristic soils alternate transversely in the vineyard: a red, iron-rich clay which is medium compact and rich in fine skeleton from quartzites, and a looser white calcareous clay with coarser calcarenite skeleton.

The soils, as in many parts of Sardinia, are rich in potassium and fairly poor in nitrogen. The positive presence of clay, although it involves more care in soil management, ensures us a fairly constant water supply during the growing season and gives structure and elegance the wines.

The first hectare, Vermentino, was planted in 1998 following the explantation of the old family vineyard.

Hence the genetic material comes entirely from the explanted vineyard, so we are fortunate to have preserved a very old mass selection of Vermentino that preserves certain quality characteristics that are fundamental to us (medium-small and sparse bunch, elongated shape with a discreet semi-aromaticity of the berry).

The second planting took place in the 2000’s, of about half a hectare of Cagnulari, this one again grafted in the field, but with genetic material from different vineyards in surrounding areas.

In 2021 we planted an additional half hectare of Cagnulari, though we changed the planting spacing (reducing it) and used different rootstocks.

OUR PHILOSOPHY OF PRODUCTION

“lotta ragionata”

Several years before we organized our company, we began a conversion path toward organic farming. We think it is fair and honest to leverage the natural suitability that our territory has to offer us.

While strictly complying with the wine regulation policy, our philosophy of production is essentially based on the principle of “reasoned pest control” (lutte raisonnée).

Therefore, we try to intervene as little as possible with any kind of products both in the vineyard and in the winery, allowing the plants and the wines to give us the products we want through agronomic choices alone.

We believe this is possible by putting the vines in a condition to work at its best for our goals, both directly (avoiding unnatural forcing of the plant altogether) and indirectly, acting on the vineyard ecosystem.

An ecosystem that’s as complex as rich in essences as possible means life in and around the vineyard, allowing varieties of microbes, insects and animals that contribute to the overall fertility of the vines and soil.

Consequently the translation of this work in the cellar allows us a minimum intervention (always and in any case reasoned and punctual) to get the wines we believe it’s right to produce and offer in our territory.

We do not like labels or unbridled categorization; we feel we are artisanal and ethically sincere wine producers.
